History of CP Glass S. A. dates back to 28 November 1989 when, before any changes in the Polish economic system took place, a joint venture company, Pol-Am-Pack S.A. limited liability company, with participation of American capital was formed in Brzesko on the basis of FOB Opakomet company. At that time it was one of the first, big private production companies in Poland. The company manufactured steel three-part packagings for chemicals and food articles and crown caps for glass bottles.
As a result of many modernization investments and related changes in ownership the company finally transformed into Pol-Am-Pack S. A., joint-stock company where the majority shareholder was CANPACK S.A. with its registered office in Cracow.
Pol-Am-Pack S. A. acquired the following companies that produces steel packagings: FOB Sp. z o.o. in Bydgoszcz and Fomet Sp. z o.o. in Dębica, to become the biggest manufacturer of high quality modern metal packagings for foods and chemicals in Poland. Pol-Am-Pack S. A. was also the founder and strategic investor in: ZAT Ukr-Pack in Jaworow in Ukraine, Metałopłastmas in Jaworow in Ukraine, WOZ in Wolokolamsk in Russia, Amep-Pack S.A. in Tecuci in Romania, Pol-Am-Pack Narzędziownia Sp. z o.o. in Brzesk and Pol-Am-Pack/CANPACK Transport Sp. z o.o. in Brzesk. All these companies manufactured steel packagings or provided services related to the manufacture of steel packagings.
On the basis of an agreement with shareholders Pol-Am-Pack S. A. took over the management in Arab Can Co in Sharjah in UAE that manufactured steel packgagings in the Persian Gulf area.
Pol-Am-Pack S. A. as the first company in Central and Eastern Europe commenced the production of welded packgagings instead of soldered packagings, applied bevel cutting of metal plates from rings, introduced thin, double reduced steel tinned plates and started the varnishing and lithographing of metal plates on large size sheets.
Achievements of Pol-Am-Pack S. A. engineers include solutions for pressed caps whose construction enables the application of water soluble paints, the use of metal plates less than 0.13 mm thick and the commencement of production of easily opened steel full panel lids with diameters of 52, 73, 83 and 99 mm, with very good protection of cut.
Since 1992 POL-AM-PACK S. A. has been operating within the structure of CANPACK Capital Group. As a result of actions aimed at simplifying the group’s structure, facilitating its management, concentrating on basic production activities and optimizing the employment, in March 2003 the steel packaging production business was transferred to CANPACK S.A., which also took over the majority of Pol-Am-Pack S. A. employees.
Within the strategy for management of CANPACK Group Pol-Am-Pack S.A. became a holding company to manage and finance subsidiaries belonging to the CANPACK Group.
Due to a decision taken to diversify the CANPACK Group’s assortment and to extend its offer by glass packagings on 16 June 2005 Pol-Am-Pack S.A. acquired Orzesze Glassworks in Orzesze (HSO) from its receiver. After the acquisition of the glassworks, it was restructured and technologically revamped in order to transform the glassworks into a manufacturer of modern glass packagings able to compete in domestic market. This stage has been successfully completed.
At the moment of its acquisition Orzesze Glassworks had outdated technology and did not have any equipment for product quality control. Since it was not able to meet growing quality demands from the market, it lost its customers.
The investment in HSO covered the rebuilding of a furnace, purchase of one and modernization of two existing moulding automatic machines and the providing of quality control instruments for production lines. A workshop to prepare and repair glass moulds was opened in order to improve the quality of moulding. Quality procedures and corporate governance rules applicable within the CANPACK Group were implemented. Poland’s state-of-the-art technological line for processing and treating cullet that segregates glass by colors and ensures cullet purity of 99.5% was purchased. Moreover, the line is also used for granulation of cleaned cullet, which results in its big share in a batch (furnace charge). Increased share of cullet in the glass melting process results in significant reduction in consumption of electric energy and gas.
NNPB thin wall technology for bottles and PB technology for jars was implemented to reduce the quantity of molten glass in finished goods while retaining their unchanged functional parameters. A modern infrastructure for starting the production was created including compressors and fans to cool off moulds, electric energy and compressed air supply systems. As a result of the agreement between Pol-Am-Pack S.A. and Heye (German engineering group operating in the glass production business) technical staff and operators of production lines were trained in German glassworks.
As a result of investments made new products appeared in HSO’s commercial offer: amber and green beer bottles and thin-walled spirit bottles. The quality of products has significantly improved. As a result of modernization Pol-Am-Pack S. A. gained access to the modern technology of thin wall glass production and implemented modern technology of quality control to meet demands of corporate customers.
In October 2007 Orzesze Glassworks branch positively underwent a certification audit in terms of implementation of procedures of an integrated quality management system covering ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 2200:2005 and HACCP based on ISO 22000.
After the modernization HSO reached:
- productivity and production parameters that corresponded to present industrial standards in this sector,
- quality of products meeting high expectations of corporate customers,
- very good indicators of direct costs of production and own costs corresponding to the best indicators of competitors.
From December 17th, 2015, the company’s name has been changed to CP Glass S.A.
